Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: The County of San Diego, Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) holds monthly telebriefings for health professionals and offer 1 hour of CME credit for them. These are held the first Thursday of every month at 3:30pm, the next on February 6th. You can CLICK HERE to register for HHSA’s e–blasts on relevant health updates and for telebriefing reminders.

SD COUNTY HHSA HAS ISSUED RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PREVENTING AND MONITORING HIGHLYPATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA A [H5N1]

The CDC has identified 66 human cases of H5N1 bird flu in the US since March 2024.

If you suspect H5N1, initiate antiviral treatment with oseltamivir (twice daily x 5 days) as soon as possible. Post–exposure prophylaxis of close contacts of an infected person is recommended with oseltamivir twice daily (treatment dosing).

Contact the San Diego County Epidemiology line at (619) 692–8499 (Monday–Friday 8 AM–5 PM) or (858) 565–5255 (after hours and holidays). Testing for other potential causes of acute respiratory illness should also be considered, including SARS–CoV–2.

Seasonal flu vaccines do not provide protection against human infection with H5N1 viruses. Seasonal flu vaccination remains important to prevent co–infection and viral modification leading to human–to–human spread.

SUPPORT PHC WILDFIRE DISASTER RELIEF FUND TO HELP PHYSICIANS IN NEED

The active wildfires in Southern California have destroyed thousands of homes, structures and medical practices, as well as displaced thousands of residents and your physician colleagues. In response, California Medical Association (CMA) and Physicians for a Healthy California (PHC) have launched a donation page to support impacted physicians and their practices HERE.

Donations to the Disaster Relief Fund will be used to reestablish the delivery of medical care to areas of California affected by disasters by providing physicians who are victims of disasters with financial assistance to help restore their medical practices.

In addition, CMA has created a Wildfire Resources page HERE to help answer questions and provide assistance to those who need it.
